We ate....WORMS?!?!?

This week in reading, we read a poem called "I Brought a Worm." In the poem, the little girl brought a (candy) worm to show and tell and ate it! Today, I surprised the students with their very own worm to eat! YUM!

We are Friends!

Our reading unit on friends is in full swing. This week we read Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel. We are discussing examples (and non-examples) of being a good friend and are beginning to respond to texts with pictures, letters, and words. Most importantly, we've begun to make friends with our classmates - how wonderful! Please check back this week for more fun and learning from our classroom!

Friendship Salad

This nine weeks, we are working on a Friendship Unit in Reading. We've been discussing the characteristics of a good friend and have read many pieces of literature on friendship. On Friday, we created a friendship salad; each ingredient represented something important in our classroom. The bowl represented our classroom, each ingredient represented friends who make good choices, friends who use kind words, friends who share, etc. When I tried to add a very rotten banana - the students all screamed "noooo!" When I asked why I couldn't include it, they explained that the banana was yucky. I explained that the banana represented friends that made bad choices, were not kind, didn't share, etc. We decided not to include that "friend" in our salad. Next we all ate the salad - it was enjoyed by all!

Please talk with your child about this activity, and let us know what part of the salad they enjoyed most by leaving a comment below! :)
